Walnut pie from Lesvos

Directions

  1. Baste a baking pan with oil. Mix the nutmeg, the walnut and the sugar.
  2. Spread 2 sheets of pastry and spread part of the mixture over them.
  3. Add some oil and continue spreading layers of filo pastry and mixture until you spread the last filo sheets.
  4. Baste the top filo sheets well with oil. Score the filo to mark square pieces and bake in moderate oven until the pie gets brown.
  5. In the meantime prepare the syrup as the following instructions indicate.
  6. Place all ingredients in a saucepan and boil. Stir until the syrup thickens.
  7. It does not have to be very thick since it will be sprinkled over the pie and will be absorbed.
  8. When the pie is ready, remove from the oven and pour the syrup all over it.
  9. Let the pie cool and then serve.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg walnut kernel, grinded
  • 1 kg of ready-made sheets of filo pastry
  • 1/2 glass sugar
  • 1 nutmeg
  • 1 tea cup olive oil

Syrup

Ingredients

  • 5 glasses of sugar
  • 2 glasses of water
  • 1/2 lemon
